Arm Lift Recovery: Week by Week
· By Dr. Laura Cala
Dr. Laura Cala Uribe is a plastic surgeon in Bogotá, Colombia, a pioneer of MIA Femtech and Motiva Preservé in Colombia, specializing in body contouring and arm surgery.
What is an arm lift?
An arm lift, or brachioplasty, removes excess skin and fat from the inner upper arm. It is indicated when laxity does not improve with exercise, for example after major weight loss or with age. It is often combined with liposuction for a better contour.
The timelines below are a general guide; Dr. Laura Cala gives your personal instructions at each check-up. [DATO A VALIDAR: timelines per Dr. Cala's protocol].
First 48 hours
Your arms are wrapped in compression. Tightness, swelling and some discomfort are normal and controlled with medication. Rest, keep your arms slightly elevated when lying down and avoid raising them overhead. Gentle walks at home help circulation.
Week 1
Swelling peaks and then starts to ease. At your first check-up the incisions are reviewed and any drains removed. Avoid lifting, driving and wide arm movements. Bruising and changes in sensation are normal.
Week 2
Many patients feel more energetic and return to desk work if cleared. [DATO A VALIDAR: usual return to work]. Sutures may be removed, and scar care begins: cleaning, moisturizing and sun protection.
Weeks 3 and 4
Swelling keeps decreasing and the arm contour becomes more defined. Compression continues, and lymphatic drainage may be recommended. Still avoid lifting and arm workouts; walking is usually fine.
Weeks 5 to 8
Most patients are back to normal daily life. Dr. Cala will tell you when to resume exercise gradually. The scar may look pink or slightly raised as it matures, so keep up sun protection.
Months 3 to 12
Results settle and the scar slowly flattens and fades, depending on your skin type. A stable weight helps preserve results long term.
Warning signs
Contact the team if you have fever, increasing pain, intense redness, discharge from the incisions, sudden swelling of one arm or shortness of breath.
